Winners revealed: 2024 Australian Urban Design Awards

The winners of the 2024 Australian Urban Design Awards were announced at a presentation in Canberra on Monday 18 March. The awards recognize contemporary Australian urban design of the highest quality and aim to encourage innovation in the built environment across cities, towns and communities. They are co-convened by the Australian Institute of Architects, the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA) and the Planning Institute of Australia (PIA).

Eleven projects were recognized in this year’s program, including four winners. In the Built Projects – City and Regional Scale category George Street, Sydney by City of Sydney was announced the winner with the jury noting that the project “was testament to the power that the collaboration of multiple levels of government can bring to cities.”

Quantifying quality by SJB and University of Technology Sydney took out the gong in the Leadership, Advocacy and Research – Local and Neighbourhood Scale category.

“[Quantifying quality] challenges the conventional methods of quantifying public space quality by democratising the process and integrating both subjective and objective data to refine design solutions,” the jury stated.

“The project stands as a benchmark of innovation, guiding urban designers, planners, and policymakers toward a more informed and community-centric approach to shaping the built environment.”
